For our latest escape, we chose the charming coastal town of Primošten as our base for a glorious 10-day adventure through the heart of Dalmatia. Having heard whispers of its beauty, we were eager to settle into its laid-back atmosphere and explore the treasures this stunning region of Croatia had to offer. And Primošten, with its picturesque peninsula and crystal-clear waters, proved to be the perfect anchor for our Dalmatian dreams.

Why Primošten?

Primošten is a peninsula town connected to the mainland by a causeway. This unique setting gives it a secluded, almost island-like feel. It boasts a beautiful, historic center with narrow, winding streets, a picturesque harbor, and stunning views of the Adriatic. Primošten is also strategically located, making it easy to explore other Dalmatian gems.
Day 1: Arrival and Primošten Charm
After arriving at Split Airport, a scenic drive brought us to Primošten. We checked into our accommodation and immediately set out to have dinner at a local konoba featuring fresh seafood.
First days: Exploring Primošten Charm
Our first few days were dedicated to soaking in the magic of Primošten itself. This little gem was instantly captivating with its tightly packed stone houses clinging to a small, pine-covered peninsula. We spent hours wandering its narrow, winding streets, discovering hidden courtyards and charming konobas (traditional taverns). The air was filled with the scent of pine and the salty tang of the Adriatic.
Beyond the charming streets, Primošten offers some truly special local experiences:
Statue of Our Lady of Loreto: For breathtaking panoramic views, we highly recommend a visit to the Statue of Our Lady of Loreto perched atop Gaj Hill. This impressive 17-meter monument, adorned with intricate mosaics of gold, silver, and colored glass, is not only a significant religious site but also provides a spectacular vantage point to admire Primošten, its surrounding islands, and the vast Adriatic Sea. A café and souvenir shop are at the top, making it a perfect spot to relax and soak in the scenery.

Plaža Velika Raduča: Primošten boasts some truly breathtaking stretches of coastline, and Plaža Velika Raduča is a prime example. We spent countless hours swimming in the unbelievably clear turquoise waters, basking in the Mediterranean sun, and simply unwinding. This main pebble beach offers excellent amenities, including rental options for sun loungers, umbrellas, jet skis, and even a kids' club and aquapark for families. The ease of having paddleboards freely available at our Airbnb meant daily excursions along the coast, exploring hidden coves, and enjoying the stunning views from a different perspective.
Olive Oil Tasting & Shopping: Dalmatia is renowned for its excellent olive oil, and Primošten is no exception. We discovered several local family-run farms that produce high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Many offer tasting opportunities, allowing you to sample the liquid gold and learn about the traditional production methods. It's an ideal way to bring a taste of Croatia home with you. That's what we always return with!
Art and Souvenir Shopping: As we explored the winding streets of the old town, we found several charming boutiques and art shops. From handcrafted jewelry featuring local Croatian stone (like limestone from Brač) to unique metal sculptures and traditional textiles, there's a good selection of artisan crafts and souvenirs that make for meaningful mementos of your trip.
But Dalmatia is so much more than just its beautiful beaches, and Primošten's central location made it ideal for exploring further afield.
One day, we embarked on a trip to the magnificent Krka National Park. The journey inland was a welcome change of scenery, leading us to the iconic Skradinski Buk waterfall. The sheer power and beauty of the cascading water were mesmerizing, and we spent hours walking the wooden pathways that weave through the travertine barriers and lush vegetation. It was a refreshing escape into nature's grandeur.
Another day saw us driving to the historic city of Šibenik. Steeped in history, Šibenik boasts impressive Venetian architecture, including the stunning St. James Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We wandered through its charming old town, explored its fortresses offering panoramic views of the Adriatic, and enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch overlooking the harbor. Šibenik's rich cultural heritage was a fascinating contrast to Primošten's coastal charm.

Our exploration continued with a visit to the UNESCO-listed city of Trogir. Situated on a small island connected to the mainland by bridges, Trogir's compact old town is a treasure trove of medieval architecture. We wandered through its narrow streets, admiring the Venetian palaces, the impressive Kamerlengo Fortress, and the stunning Cathedral of St. Lawrence with its intricate Radovan's Portal. Trogir felt like stepping directly into a history book.
Another day trip north took us to the vibrant city of Zadar. Famous for its unique modern attractions, Zadar captivated us with the mesmerizing Sea Organ, which plays music powered by the waves, and the dazzling Greeting to the Sun, a large solar-powered installation that puts on a spectacular light show at sunset.
We strolled along the Riva, absorbed the lively atmosphere, and explored the Roman Forum, remnants of the city's ancient past. Zadar offered a more urban and contemporary Dalmatian experience.

Throughout our 10 days, we always looked forward to returning to the familiar comfort of Primošten. Evenings were spent strolling along the waterfront promenade, enjoying fresh seafood dinners at local konobas, and watching the sunset paint the sky in vibrant hues. And the ease of having paddleboards freely available at our Airbnb truly enhanced our stay. Almost every day, we took to the unbelievably clear turquoise waters, exploring the coastline from a different perspective, paddling into hidden coves, and soaking in the stunning views of the peninsula and the surrounding Adriatic. These peaceful excursions on the water became a cherished daily ritual, adding an extra layer of magic to our Primošten experience.
Beyond the delightful konobas of Primošten, our taste buds were treated to a wonderful array of dining experiences throughout Dalmatia. In our home base of Primošten, some of our favorite spots included Konoba Bracera in Primošten for its fresh sardines and delicious octopus salad facing the water. Another great tavern was Konoba Dvor. It's a family-owned restaurant, and the signature dishes were so amazing.
In Šibenik, we enjoyed a fantastic meal at Pa'Kai, savoring the salmon bowl and their famous Japanese Bun with Shrimp. Zadar's culinary scene was the best in our whole trip. I'm saying this not because I'm biased by Zadar, but every dish we had at Trattoria Mediterraneo was so delicious. We tried the creamy seafood soup, the seabass, and we forgot to take photos, so much the food was so delicious in a beautiful outdoor seating alley. Finally, step into Tinel in Trogir and be instantly charmed by its picturesque setting, where vibrant hues of dishes and chairs pop against the historic backdrop, conveniently located opposite one of the town's iconic stone arches. It's the perfect spot to soak in the beauty of Trogir while enjoying a delightful coffee.
From the relaxed konobas of Primošten to the diverse flavors found in the larger cities, dining in Dalmatia was truly a highlight of our trip.
Primošten proved to be more than just a base; it became an integral part of our Dalmatian experience. Its beauty, its relaxed pace, and its perfect location allowed us to seamlessly blend days of exploration with blissful moments of seaside relaxation. This 10-day journey through Dalmatia, anchored by the charm of Primošten, was a truly unforgettable escape, leaving us with sun-kissed skin and a longing to return to this captivating corner of Croatia.
