Back to the Pearl: My Dubrovnik Reunion From Ancient Walls to Island Escapes.

Updated: May 16

Dubrovnik holds a special place in my travel history, this being my second visit to its ancient walls and my sixth time overall exploring the wonders of Croatia. This trip, however, was a delightful blend of personal rediscovery and sharing my love for this country with family members who entrusted me to tailor our itinerary, knowing my familiarity with its charms.

Returning to Dubrovnik felt like a comfortable homecoming, and experiencing it anew through their eyes added another layer of joy to this Croatian chapter. Come along as we navigate familiar streets and create new memories together in this "Pearl of the Adriatic."

Each visit has woven a richer tapestry of memories, and returning to Dubrovnik felt like reuniting with an old friend. Come along as I rediscover its magic and delve deeper into its familiar embrace.

Day 1: Settling into Royalty

Our arrival was smooth, and the Royal Princess Hotel lived up to its name. Perched overlooking the sparkling sea, it was the perfect haven to unwind after our travels. After settling in and freshening up, our first Dubrovnik dinner was at the hotel's restaurant, More. With the gentle sound of the waves as our backdrop, we enjoyed a delicious introduction to Croatian cuisine – fresh seafood! It was the perfect, relaxed start to our adventure.

Day 2: Stepping Back in Time in the Stari Grad

Day two was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of it all: the Stari Grad, Dubrovnik's breathtaking Old Town. We joined a fantastic walking tour with Freetour of Dubrovnik, and our guide brought the ancient stones to life with captivating stories. Wandering through the labyrinthine streets, it felt like stepping back centuries. We even had the chance to peek into the fascinating Franciscan Monastery pharmacy, a true historical treasure operating since 1317!

Lunch was a highlight, a pilgrimage to Barba, made famous by "Somebody Feed Phil." The lobster burger lived up to the hype – juicy and decadent – and the seafood platter was a fresh taste of the Adriatic. Afterwards, we strolled down the iconic Stradun Promenade, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, lined with charming shops and bustling cafes. After a refreshing break back at the hotel, we ventured out for a traditional Croatian dinner at Konoba Dubrava, tucked away and serving hearty, local fare.

Day 3: Conquering the Mighty City Walls

An early start on day three was dedicated to the majestic City Walls. At 8 am, we were among the first to embark on the complete circuit. Walking the 2 km path, with the turquoise sea on one side and the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town on the other, was simply awe-inspiring. It took us a leisurely 2 hours, stopping frequently for photos and to soak in the panoramic vistas.

The midday sun called for a relaxing break, and we enjoyed a delightful lunch on the balcony of our suite, savoring the views from a different perspective.

For dinner, we indulged in the rich and flavorful Balkan cuisine of Taj Mahal, a Michelin Guide-recommended restaurant in the Old Town. The spices and unique dishes were a delightful change of pace.

Day 4: A Coastal Escape to Makarska

Craving a change of scenery, we rented a car and took a scenic 2.5-hour drive north to Makarska. This charming coastal town offered a different vibe, with its picturesque harbor and stunning Biokovo Mountain backdrop. We enjoyed a simple yet delicious lunch of grilled sardines by the water, strolled along the promenade, and picked up a few souvenirs. The drive back to Dubrovnik was equally beautiful, hugging the coastline.

For dinner, we experienced another Michelin Guide gem, Marco Polo, where the elegant ambiance and exquisite dishes made for a memorable evening.

Day 5: Island Time in Enchanting Korcula

A day trip to the island of Korcula was a must. We didn't buy the ferry tickets in advance, and unfortunately, we couldn't find availability for the early departure. Therefore, we drove to Orebic, taking a short 20-minute ferry to Korcula town.

The journey itself was a treat, with stunning views of the archipelago. The Old Town of Korcula, often called "Little Dubrovnik" due to its similar layout and impressive walls, was a joy to explore. We wandered through its charming streets, imagining Marco Polo's childhood here.

For a late lunch, we found a wonderful spot, Konoba Biankura Korčula, savoring fresh seafood with a view of the harbor. The drive and ferry back were smooth, and we ended the day with a relaxed dinner at a restaurant along the lively promenade of Lapad, enjoying the evening buzz.

Day 6: Kayaking Adventures and Sunset Spectacle

Day six brought a different kind of exploration. We joined a fantastic one-hour kayaking tour that took us right outside the imposing city walls. Paddling along the ancient fortifications from the sea offered a unique and breathtaking perspective.

After a refreshing shower back at the hotel, we headed for the iconic Mount Srđ. The cable car ride up was thrilling, revealing the full splendor of Dubrovnik laid out below. We enjoyed sunset drinks and light snacks at the panorama restaurant at the top, the colors painting the sky, and the Old Town in a magical light.

For our final Michelin-recommended dinner, we descended back into the city and dined at Zuzori, known for its refined Mediterranean cuisine.

Day 7: Farewell Stroll and Seaside Serenity

Our final full day was spent soaking in the last moments of Dubrovnik's charm. We took a leisurely tour of the Old Town, revisiting some favorite spots and discovering new hidden corners. Souvenir shopping was a must, picking up reminders of our incredible week. We enjoyed a quintessential Dubrovnik experience – a coffee at a cafe on the bustling Stradun, watching the world go by.

Our farewell dinner was at Gverovic-Orsan, a beautiful waterfront restaurant where we could almost touch the sea. The fresh seafood and the gentle lapping of the waves provided the perfect ambiance to reflect on our amazing trip.

Day 8: Until Next Time, Dubrovnik

After a final breakfast overlooking the Adriatic, it was time to check out, our hearts full of memories of this captivating city. Dubrovnik, you truly are a pearl. Your history, your beauty, and your vibrant spirit have left an indelible mark. I can't wait for the day I return to wander your ancient streets once more.
